Pound for Pound: My Aching Knees

Pound for Pound: My Aching Knees

By J. R. Rogers

For those who are readers of my column you know pretty much what my position is on Osteoarthritis. A top-quality liquid Glucosamine product; exercise; and, a sensible diet.

I do not know of any medical experts that would disagree with my thoughts on these issues. When you live with the pain of OA, it is worth the small effort it takes to get it under control.

The Weight Issue and Body Weight

There are no “hard and fast” rules about how weight affects OA pain in your lower body and in particular, most with knee pain. However, researchers have found that those who are overweight are more likely to have incurred a torn meniscus which is the primary cushion that serves the knees. For those who have OA, it is already at risk so this adds another dimension to the problem.

The Studies

There was a study conducted at Wake Forest University that involved women only; 75% were between the ages of 60 and 89 and each was overweight. I really like the numbers here because they tell us a great deal about the overall affect of being obese.

For each pound lost by participants, there was a reduction of load on the knees by four times that amount. That sounds a little confusing but what they are saying is that in their study, a one mile walk and one pound lost equaled 4,800 pounds of “compressive load” from the knees.

They also extended that number out from there. They said that if you lost 10 lbs., you would reduce the load on your knees by 48,000 pounds over that same mile. The numbers can become pretty impressive here.

Think about this. Our lower bodies take a beating as it is. It is the load-bearing part of our body and we need as much “go power” as we can get from our legs, knees, hips and feet. Being overweight simply pushes the body’s limits and for those with OA it becomes a doubly difficult problem.

The Reality

We tend to forget about issues like this even when we are suffering. Of course, if we do not get a handle on excessive weight, it creeps up on us. It also becomes more and more difficult to lose.

I cannot tell you what to do. All I can do is give you the facts. There is no escaping the fact that excessive weight is going to do an enormous amount of damage to our very valuable knees. Sometimes, it is more than they can handle.

Do yourself a favor. Give your knees a little relief before it is too late. Now that is much easier than saying, “go lose some weight” don’t you think?

See you next time.

Is Glucosamine taking a new direction?

Is taking a new direction?

By J. R. Rogers

Recently, I have been doing some extra research. And of course, there are always those who want to offer up their opinions whether they are warranted or not. At least, that is what I found in doing some of this extra reading.

Glucosamine has over a thirty-year history of success in clinical trials. And, there is no doubt in my mind that it is decidedly the best choice for those who suffer from Osteoarthritis. The most recent clinical studies have once again confirmed that fact. And, when adding other ingredients to enhance the performance of Glucosamine it is an unbeatable combination.

By now, most of you know that prescription arthritis drugs have been removed from the market because of safety concerns. And, even over-the-counter pain remedies are coming under serious government scrutiny because of the same safety issues. For me, there is no doubt that Glucosamine is the winner across the board for pain relief and from a safety standpoint. And, that ignores the fact that it even rehabilitates damaged cartilage.

New studies

I mention this report because it has some correlation to the pain of OA. Namely, when there is pain there is generally inflammation as well. This study deals with the same issue.

Researchers from the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University (and, the Hospital for Neuroscience) conducted some studies and concluded that the anti-inflammatory qualities of Glucosamine (may) aid those who suffer from MS. Now, although they were quick to say that they felt this was a result of the anti-inflammatory qualities of Glucosamine and that it should be used with conventional therapies used for MS, it also tells us that the ability of Glucosamine to fight inflammation is very high.

MS is thought to be an autoimmune disorder. If you have read my columns, you know that this is a situation where the body attacks its own tissue. In the case of MS sufferers, it coatings of the nerve fibers become inflamed and scarred.

This study group was composed of mice. Of course, the earliest clinical studies of Glucosamine also used animals as the target of their research. The broad results that the study reported were that there was less inflammation in those given Glucosamine.

So, what does all this mean?

I have recommended the use of high-quality liquid Glucosamine for many years for those who suffer from OA. I want to be quick to say that I do not recommend it for other medical disorders. But, this study confirms that the anti-inflammatory qualities of Glucosamine are real and not a figment of anyone’s imagination. Certainly, over thirty year of research say that is so.

Again, I am always finding a few ‘writers’ who are quick to criticize anything that is not provided by large pharmaceutical companies and the doctors they push to promote their products. I can only conclude that they might pay more attention to how much good the less expensive Glucosamine does for the public instead of trying to find ways to leave questions in the minds of those who use it.

If you suffer from Osteoarthritis, stay with the program. And, use only the highest quality product you can find.

See you next time.
